Monopoli historic centre
Along the lanes of the old town, the Cathedral of Maria Santissima della Madia reveals the Baroque soul of Monopoli.

A story shaped by the sea
Today's building holds centuries of faith, art and tradition, from the first Romanesque church to its theatrical Baroque reconstruction.
Construction begins on the Romanesque Cathedral above an earlier pre-Romanesque church.
According to tradition, the icon of the Madonna della Madia reaches the shore at dawn on 16 December aboard a raft. Its timbers allow the church roof to be completed.
The Cathedral is rebuilt in the late Baroque form seen today, with its monumental façade, bell tower and richly coloured marble.
The old harbour
The harbour is one of Monopoli's most loved places: an authentic corner for strolling among colourful fishing boats, old walls and reflections on the water.
